Ashley Campbell — freelance writer, editor & web writer
A few years ago I wrote a poem on the Steam Age. Mr Curry, the object of my first schoolgirl crush, marked my poem “Excellent” and gave it not one, but two, ticks.
I was hooked, and one way or another I’ve been working with words ever since, most recently as a freelance writer and freelance editor.
Journalism career
After graduating from the University of Canterbury with a BA in political science and a postgraduate diploma in journalism, I began a career that took me to many of New Zealand's major newspapers — the Press, Sunday Star-Times, New Zealand Herald and Herald on Sunday, as a reporter, subeditor and section editor.
It also took me to the United Kingdom where I spent a year as a subeditor on the national daily Today and 18 months as production editor of a weekly clinical news magazine.
Freelance writer and editor
After a year as a marketing copywriter for Sovereign I spent two years as a freelance writer and freelance editor. The New Zealand Herald drew me back into fulltime journalism, but since 2006 I have again been freelancing.
As well as continuing to work as a freelance writer for newspapers and magazines, I work as a business writer, writing press releases, website content, ghost-written articles, client newsletters and any other copywriting that needs a professional touch.
Keeping it simple
Ideas and messages are important. People are busy — too busy to waste time reaching for a dictionary and trying to understand jargon. Good writing helps your audience understand your message first time. And that's how I write.
